This winter sports area in Saariselkä is in the middle of the Finnish wilderness and guarantees adventure and fun! The most northerly ski resort in Europe lies in a snowy landscape of hills and is surrounded by vast forests. The northern location ensures a good snow pack, giving you a real winter feeling. The low sun and the clear arctic air give the landscape a fairytale appearance. On a clear night the sky lights up with spectacular colors of the northern lights! From your stay you can easily reach the slopes or the cross-country ski run. Saariselkä Ski Resort has 15 ski runs for both beginners and advanced skiers who are all easily accessible with ski buses and lifts. Dog sleigh rides and snowmobile rides are also great activities here that you can do with friends or family. And if it really gets too cold? Then you can warm up in a traditional Finnish sauna.
The residence is 10 km away from Saariselkä in Kilopää at the entrance to the national park. The rocky mountains (fjells) and the many forests form the habitat for many animal species such as the lemming, the ermine, the bear and the eagle. It is possible in winter to make a walk with snowshoes from the residence or a nice trip with a fattbike. Organized activities are offered such as walking tours and northern lights activities. Hotels, cafés and shops can be found in nearby Saariselkä, which is easily accessible daily with the (ski) bus. Nice to know is that the village offers facilities for both young and old. There is a luxury wellness center, a water amusement park and an agry birds amusement park for children.
The trails are ready for use between November and May. More than 200 km of well-prepared routes are ideal for enjoying long cross-country skiing. The long winters last from November to May and ensure lots of winter fun. The small-scale nature of the resort and the vast wilderness provide a sense of peace and space. The enormous expanse of trees and hills is interrupted by wooden cabins where you can warm up inside by the fireplace.
In the evening and night you can enjoy this special natural phenomenon here. Because Saariselkä is located about 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, the northern lights often occur here. The long winters and the clear nights ensure that the sky is often illuminated by the polar lights. A good camera and a tripod is recommended to capture the polar light nicely.
At the edge of Urho Kekkonen National Park is the winter sports resort Fell Center Kiilopää. Surrounded by snowy hills in the middle of the wilderness, your winter holiday takes place here. The area exudes peace and space and is aimed at families and small groups. The village of Saariselkä is around 10 km away. The closest airport is Ivalo from where you will be picked up by bus and within 45 minutes of your stay. In addition to a classic hotel with restaurant, you can spend the night here in comfortable wooden cabins or spacious apartments. Renting skis and fattbikes is possible on site and the slopes are immediately accessible. Many activities are offered daily throughout the stay. The cabins all include bed linen and towels.
Log cabin (2 ps)
The resort has spacious wooden cabins of 44 m2 for 2 people with their own modern kitchen, bathroom, fireplace and a sauna (electric). A dryer is available to dry outdoor sportswear and shoes. The cabins are located in the middle of a forest within walking distance of the main building (300 – 500 meters) and offer a lot of privacy. The sofa in the living room is foldable where 2 more people can sleep. Pets are not allowed.
Wilderness cabin (4 ps)
The wooden wilderness cabin is around 30 m2 and offers space for 4 people. There is a large sleeping area with 2 bunk beds and well suited for friends or small groups. The cabin has its own modern kitchen, bathroom and a sauna (electric). A dryer is available to dry outdoor sportswear and shoes.
