The seven-day cycling tour starts in the ever vibrant and colourful Ålesund. The Atlantic Ocean Road will take you 130 km along the arctic coast to Kristiansund. The route has been marked with the EuroVelo cycling logo and takes you over rolling (and sometimes steep) motorways. You will cycle the Norwegian Scenic Route, of which the Atlantic Ocean Road is the absolute highlight. The surroundings are varied; fjords alternate with islands that are home to ancient fishermen villages. Incorporate the cycling tour with a cruise to the Geiranger or the Hjørundfjorden. Once arrived in Kristiansund, the Hurtigruten will take you back to Ålesund. The cruise sales south along the coast and is a nice change from the cycling tour. Accommodations along the route have been booked in luxurious hotels and/or spacious cabins. The hotels are of historical value to the region and have been considerably modernized and expanded with wellness resorts, restaurants and stunning views onto the surroundings.

E-mountainbike Cannondale Trail Neo 1 (2018)

This high-end MTB has it all due to its powerful Shimano Steps battery of 504 Wh, which is integrated into the frame. They come with waterproof bags, lock, helmet, cycling board computer and a charger for the battery. The electrical support for the e-bike has three options and has a range of over 100km on a fully charged battery. The support is delightful on sloping terrain and stretches with strong headwinds. The bike has sprung front forks and disc brakes.

Atlantic Ocean Road

The route is known as one of the most beautiful automobile routes in the world. Its striking architectural style has made the road a true tourist attraction. The bendy road takes you across the ocean from island to island before reaching the mainland again after 8 km. During stormy weather the road might be closed for security reasons, however, during summer it is safe to cycle here. There are multiple spots along the route that allow space to park so that you can take photos of the surroundings.

Route and terrain

The route mostly follows the Velo 1 and has been marked. The signage is clearly visible with red signs at the side of the road. There are paved cycling paths you can use. Some parts of the route cover paved motorway and gravel roads. The cycling route (Velo 1) is relatively unknown to most cyclists. The terrain can’t really be called flat, but has a mix of rolling hills and rather steep hills, with an average of 5% to 6%. You will remain on the coastal route. The stretch after the Atlantic Ocean Road up to Kristiansund has some very steep parts, of up to 10%.

The city is the perfect starting point of your cycling holiday. Visit the viewpoint Aksla, take a cruise to the fjords or take a leisurely stroll through the city centre. Ålesund is built on 3 different islands around 230 km north of Bergen and is the mooring place for the Hurtigruten. You could visit the famous Geiranger fjords during your stay, or the equally beautiful Hjørund fjord with a stopover in Øye to visit the state Hotel Union Øye.

Accommodations during this trip are booked along the route in comfortable hotels, such as Classic Norway Hotels, or spacious cabins (self-catering). The cabins have a bathroom, bedroom, patio and kitchen to prepare your meals in. On the route across the Atlantic Ocean Road you will spend a night in the guest house Hustadvika Gjestegård. The rocky coast with spectacular views onto the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean is home to the colourful wooden buildings. When in Molde you will be staying in the luxurious Hotell Molde Fjordstuer. The harbour in the fjord provides vistas of cruises coming and going. Because there are tunnels, ferries and steep/sloping roads, the cycling distances are limited which allows for ample free time to change the cycling with other activities such as walking.

Day 1 and 2 Hotel Ålesund Sunmøre

You will be spending two nights in the historical city centre. Admire the extraordinary architecture and soak up the view over the islands, the fjord and the Sunmøre Alps from the Aksla mountain. It is also possible to book a tour by boat to the fjords (Geiranger or Hjørundfjord)

Day 3 Hotel FinnøyHavstuer

The hotel is built on the island of Finnøya, right alongside the old harbour which, in its olden days, was used for fishtrade and transport but has been modernized into a charming hotel with contemporary facilities. The hotel has a restaurant, Jacuzzi, indoor pool and various organised activities on offer.

Day 4 Hotel MoldeFjordstuer

The hotel is located at the ferry port of Molde. The upscale rooms on the waterfront offer beautiful views onto the fjord and the boats that come and go. The vibrant city centre is not far from the hotel. The hotel has a restaurant and has regular events with live music.

Day 5 Guesthouse Hustadvika Gjestegård

This charming hotel is located along the Atlantic Ocean Road, a great spot along the route. The hotel has a restaurant and a wellness centre with sauna, solarium and Jacuzzi.

Day 6 Hotel Ålesund

The Hurtigruten takes you back to Ålesund in the evening. The hotel is within easy reach of the boat and is located in the city centre.
